How to combat cold and flu season and clear your stuffy nose

With cold and flu season upon us and the temperature dropping at an alarming rate, suffering through a stuffy nose seems inevitable. Luckily, there are steps you can take to breathe easier in an instant.

Nasal congestion is no joke, and the constant sniffles that often accompany a stuffy nose can drive you (and everyone within earshot) crazy. In the video below, Amy Rushlow from Prevention magazine shares two DIY tutorials on how to treat a stuffy nose, and these techniques even work as a chronic nasal congestion treatment. The best aspect of Rushlow’s demonstration is that the techniques can be done anywhere, without the use of any products or tools. Of course, you may receive a few funny looks, should you try them in public.
If your stuffy nose persists after trying these DIY fixes, Prevention magazine’s Cold & Flu Center offers additional advice. Though there is no actual cure for the common cold, there are ways to relieve some of the symptoms while the sickness runs its course. Prevention magazine emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated, resting, and taking over-the-counter medicines to lessen aches and pains — all of which can be done in conjunction with one or both of Rushlow’s techniques. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Prevention magazine advises taking preventive measures such as washing your hands, getting a flu shot, and cutting back on sugar to ensure you stay healthy.
