It’s a habit which has been rooted deeply in our minds ever since we were kids. I must admit, I was never a fan of this practice, and after you read this you won’t be either.
Imagine my surprise when I read that if I make my bed immediately after getting up it I am trapping millions of dust mites inside my sheets, bed and mattress. That is kind of gross and astonishing, but here is what I can do about it.
First, let’s explain what dust mites really are and how can they harm our health. They are tiny, microscopic bugs which live in our bed, sheets and pillows, feeding on our dead skin cells and sweat, rapidly multiplying. And they are also rapidly excreting, up to 20 times a day. Scientists have confirmed that there are up to 1.5 million dust mites in an average bed. So do the math yourself, an average of 1.5 million mites which currently reside in your bed, 20 droppings each, and the result is actually disgusting. This is the biggest health hazard for humans, dust mite excrement. It contains protein which when gets inhaled or come in contact with our skin gets our antibodies’ levels up. When our antibodies’ number increases our body starts to release histamine and that’s when the problems begin. Histamine causes the swelling and redness usually associated with allergies. As a result, you may start to notice some of the following symptoms: red and watery eyes, watery nose, itching sensation, hay fever, sneezing, coughing and even breathing problems. Some people who are extremely sensitive to these dust mites may even notice red, itchy bumps on their skin after being exposed to dust mites. So it’s very important to know how to get rid of them and improve your overall health.
How exactly can you get rid of dust mites? The solution is very easy and simple; you just have to go against everything you’ve been told as a child. DO NOT MAKE YOUR BED IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU GET OUT OF BED! If you don’t make your bed in the morning you expose them to direct sunlight and fresh air, which will dehydrate and destroy them. When you make your bed immediately after you get up you trap the heat, dead skin cells and the sweat in your bed. The dust mites feed on them and multiply extensively. So scientists advise that you go about your day, have breakfast, go to work and make your bed in the evening, this will eliminate many of the dust mites, clear the air in the room and give you a peace of mind. Also make sure that you wash your sheets and pillow cases regularly, at least once every two weeks.
There you have it, you can now be lazy and have a good reason for it. If anyone asks why your bed is not made, you can just blame it on the dust mites.
