Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies



1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature
1 stick butter, at room temperature
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 box (18 oz) moist chocolate cake mix
1 powdered sugar, as needed


  1. Beat cream cheese and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Mix in egg, then vanilla extract. Stir in cake mix. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or until the batter is firm enough to roll into balls.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Roll chilled batter into tablespoon sized balls, then roll them in powdered sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and gooey. Cool completely, then sprinkle with more powdered sugar, if desired.
